Westminster Retains League Lead With victory

Fulton, Mo. - The league-leading Westminster College women used a 14-3 first-half run to take control of the game on the way to a 74-58 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) home victory over Webster University Wednesday. With the win, the Blue Jays (16-3, 10-1 SLIAC) sweep the regular-season series from Webster (8-11, 6-4 SLIAC).

After a couple of lead changes in the opening minutes, Westminster extended a 7-6 lead to 21-9 on the way to a 41-25 lead at intermission. Webster cut the advantage to 47-41 in the second half, but the Blue Jays extended the advantage behind the play of senior Rachel Backes (Tipton, Mo./Tipton), who scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the second half. Junior Hannah Kloster (Springfield, Mo./Parkview) added 14 points of the bench, and senior Heather Letourneau (Smithton, Mo./Smithton) pitched in 10 points, six rebounds and five steals. Maggie Zehner led Webster with 17 points.
