Special Courses 

Currently the staff of the LOC offers special course to all Westminster College students.  These course are designed as companion courses to a variety of general education classes with the goal of assisting students in developing study skills to be successful in the general education course.  Students may enroll in these courses with the permission of the instructor, but they must also enroll in the specified sections of the companion course.  Students that withdraw from the general education course must also withdraw from the support course.  The current courses offered by the staff of the LOC are as follows.

Supplemental Writing – This course is designed as a companion course for students enrolled in Academic Writing (ENG 103) and will assist students in reading and writing specific text for different purposes.  This course is offered on a CR/F basis only.

Supplemental Biology – Designed as a companion course for students enrolled in Introduction to Biological Principles (BIO 105), this course will support students in understanding the key concepts presented in lectures and texts, and preparation for examinations.  This course is offered on a CR/F basis only.

Supplemental Statistics  – This course is designed as a companion course to students enrolled in Elementary Statistics (MAT 114).  The focus of the course is to assists students by reinforcing concepts and skills developed in their regular statistics course while in a small group setting, and helping students understand how to utilize their math textbooks with reading and vocabulary strategies.  This course is offered on a CR/F basis only.

Supplemental Art of the Film – This course, designed as a companion course to Art of the Film (FAR 215), helps students develop text reading and writing skills, while also assisting students with developing an appreciation for film as art by utilizing the vocabulary of the course.

Time Management Workshop – This course will help students explore various techniques and strategies in managing their time in the college environment.  Topics addressed include the semester plan, the weekly plan and other topics relevant to organizational issues.  Students with ADD or ADHD are excellent candidates for this course.  This course is offered on a CR/F basis only.

College Transition Workshop – This workshop is designed to assist students with Asperger’s Syndrome in the transition to the college environment.  Workshop topics will include social considerations and behavior appropriate for young adults in the college setting.  This course is offered on a CR/F basis only.
