Intolerance

Westminster College is committed to creating a learning/living environment that is free from discrimination and celebrates the diversity of its various campus community members. Like all college campuses, Westminster is not immune to intolerance problems of racism, sexual preference bias, religious intolerance, sexism, and other actions and/or words which reflect disregard to our campus values of fairness, integrity, respect and responsibility.

We recognize that this team may not be able to solve or eliminate all acts of intolerance on the Westminster campus. It is our goal however, to reinforce campus values, give members of the campus community an opportunity to voice their experiences or concern, and to advise the campus on how to address the concerns raised by members of the campus community.

Reporting Incidents of Intolerance

If you wish to report an incident on intolerance you may do so in two ways.

  1. Use the link on the top right of this web page.  It will take you to a report which you complete on-line.
  2. You may report an incident to the "My Voice" phone line and leave a voice mail message at 592-6002. Please give as much detail as you can.  If you wish to have the committee know who you are, be sure to state your name.

Note: It is important to note that the College has specific policies and procedures for addressing issues of harassment and Discrimination or Grievance procedures. The My Voice program does not substitute for these policies or procedures. It may be appropriate for reports to be submitted by the  procedures outlined in the harassment or Grievance procedures policies. The following links provide information on these programs and the appropriate way to file a report on these issues.

Review policies

This takes you to the home page of Human Resources and then you would have to click on the appropriate link on that page (Harassment Policy*) or Employee Handbook* to retrieve the Grievance Procedure. You may also click on either these two links to go directly to that section of the Human Resources Homepage.

What the team will do with your report

Once the report is received, one or more of the members of this team will attempt to learn as much as possible about the incident and will report that information back to the full team.  After the team has investigated the report, the team will determine an appropriate response.

The response may be a recommendation that the victim report the incident to the appropriate College official for possible disciplinary action, reporting of the incidence to law enforcement officials, educational programming on the campus on the issue or other actions designed to create a college environment that is free from discrimination and celebrates the diversity of its various campus community members.  Other recommendations may be made as deemed appropriate. Periodic reports will be shared with proper campus officials in a confidential manner.

Confidentiality of Reports

All team members pledge to listen carefully and to support our campus community members as we seek an environment that is free of intolerance.  All team members have pledged to respect the confidentiality of your report.

Those persons who report incidents can choose to remain anonymous or to have their identity known to the committee.  If the reporting person chooses to let the members of the team know their identity, the members of the team will not share the person's identity with anyone, without the permission of that person.

Please note the following, however:

  • If someone reports information which indicates that they are a danger to themselves, others or property, the committee may be required to report this information to the proper person or persons.
  • If someone reports an incident that is considered to be sexual harassment, the committee may be required to report the information to the appropriate College official.

If the reporting person chooses to be anonymous, neither the My Voice Board or the College will have any way to provide additional support directly to that person, or do important follow up on the report which might normally be deemed as important or required.
